In the mountainous regions, such as the Carpathians, temperatures are consistently colder. Here, daytime averages can hover between -5°C and -10°C (23°F and 14°F), with nighttime lows frequently falling to -15°C (5°F) or colder. These conditions are ideal for winter sports and contribute to significant snow accumulations.

For instance, a typical January day in Bucharest might see the thermometer struggling to rise above -2°C (28°F), while a ski resort like Poiana Brașov in the Carpathian Mountains could experience a daytime high of -8°C (18°F), perfect for maintaining snow cover.

Precipitation: Snow and More

Snow is the predominant form of precipitation during Romanian winters, especially from December to March. Wind is a significant factor in Romanian winter weather, often making already cold temperatures feel even more biting due to wind chill. The most notable winter wind is the "Crivăț," a strong, cold, and dry northeasterly wind originating from the Russian steppes. When the Crivăț blows, it can dramatically lower perceived temperatures and, combined with snowfall, create blizzards (known as "viscol") that can lead to whiteout conditions and significant snowdrifts, especially in the eastern and southeastern plains.

Carpathian Mountains

Transylvanian Plateau

Characterized by cold winters with significant snowfall, often protected from the harshest winds by the surrounding mountains. Temperatures are consistently below freezing, and snow cover is common.

Moldova and Wallachian Plains

These eastern and southern plains are more exposed to continental influences and the Crivăț wind. Winters here can be very cold, with frequent blizzards and prolonged periods of sub-zero temperatures.

Black Sea Coast (Dobrogea)
